The Power of Listening

Here’s some things to THINK about, a story to BE inspired by and something you can DO right now so you can start the week right on a Sunday night!

Things from me (and someone else) to THINK about

A friend is someone who will listen for the purpose of understanding you better.”

“Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable.” – David Augsburger

A story to BE enlightened by

An old Native American tale tells the story of a young brave who sought the advice of an elder in his tribe. The elder was known for his wisdom, and many in the tribe sought his counsel.

The young brave approached the elder and began to pour out his heart, speaking rapidly and passionately about his struggles and concerns. The elder listened attentively without interrupting the young man.

When the brave finished speaking, the elder took a moment of silence before responding. The elder’s words were insightful and full of wisdom, providing the young brave with valuable guidance.

The young brave, feeling truly heard and understood, thanked the elder for his advice. He asked the elder how he had acquired such wisdom. The elder replied, “By listening twice as much as I speak.”

When we listen with genuine care and attention, we create an environment where others feel valued, understood, and empowered to grow.

Something to DO right now

Identify someone in your life who may benefit from your attentive listening, whether it’s someone you work with, a friend, or family member. This person may be facing challenges, seeking guidance, or simply needing someone to talk to.

What is one opportunity you can create this week to actively and empathetically listen to that person? Commit to setting aside your own thoughts and opinions, and genuinely focus on understanding their perspective. Listening is a cornerstone of effective leadership.
